The 40-foot containers are considered, along with the 20-foot ones, as standard among maritime containers. They are built to withstand extreme weather conditions and heavy handling. They are ideal for maritime, rail, and road transport, excess stock storage, conversion, and other uses.
They have transformed logistics and international trade in several ways:
- Efficiency: Container standardization has greatly simplified the loading and unloading process, reducing waiting times.
- Lower costs: By enabling intermodal transport, 40-foot containers have significantly reduced shipping costs.
- Globalization: They make international trade more accessible and profitable for companies of all sizes, allowing small businesses to compete globally.
- Greater connectivity: They have driven investments in port, rail, and road infrastructure worldwide.
With the continued growth of global trade and technological advances, 40-foot containers are expected to remain a key component of the global supply chain. The implementation of technologies such as GPS tracking and automated container handling promises to make freight transport even more efficient in the future.
What are the dimensions of a 40-foot container?
The 40′ containers are known for their standard size: 12 meters long, 2.43 meters wide, and 2.59 meters high. Therefore, the 40-foot container is twice as long as the 20-foot container.
What is the capacity of a 40-foot container?
The internal volume of a 40′ container is 67.60 m³, and its maximum payload is 27 tonnes. This makes them a cost-effective and efficient choice for transporting a wide range of goods.
Types of 40-foot containers
40′ DV
Standard 40-foot containers, also known as dry vans, are the most common. They are ideal for non-perishable goods and offer a safe and economical solution for international shipping.

40′ HC
40-foot High Cube containers are similar to standard ones but have an extra foot (30 cm) in height. This provides additional space, making them ideal for tall items or for maximizing cargo capacity.

40′ HHDD
40-foot High Cube Double Door containers offer greater flexibility, with doors at both short ends that can be locked from the inside for cargo security. These containers are perfect for storage.
With independent access from each side, only a partition panel in the middle would be needed to create two separate sections inside the container.

40′ HCOS
40-foot containers with one fully open side, known as Open Side containers, offer lateral access to the container’s interior. They are ideal for easily loading long goods. They are also popular in commercial and creative projects such as bars, exhibition stands, and event structures.

40′ OT
40-foot Open Top containers are designed with an open roof to facilitate the loading and unloading of goods, especially items that cannot be loaded through the side doors. They are ideal for transporting heavy machinery, construction materials, or oversized products.
